Continental Bank Note Company of New York was contracted by the John O'Mahony wing of the Fenian Brotherhood to print this iconic issue. Despite being engraved by an American company, the design is entirely Irish. The vignette at left, which is also seen on the other denominations of the issue, shows an American soldier picking up a sword for Erin who points at a distant lighthouse, while an Irish wolfhound sits attentively at her feet. The portrait at right is of Theobald Wolfe Tone, the father of Irish republicanism. Bordering the face design of the note are the names of the Irish counties.
