TOURIST (or 2nd class, post-war Cabin class) LUNCHEON MENU,   03 September 1939.    7.5" x 9.5"  Menu  is IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, no tears or rips,   A  very nice menu.
This is an extremely rare menu.  If you're a serious collector of ocean liner memorabilia, you know that it's the voyage that dictates more than anything the rarity and value of items printed on-board.   For the QM, it's Maiden Voyage,  Record braking passages, wartime trooping, war bride repatriation, first postwar sailing, and then of course the final voyages across the Atlantic and culminating with "The Last Great Cruise".    RIght up there with those events is this:  The Mary's  last crossing in peacetime before and during the start of ww2.  Just imagine having been one of the 2,332 passengers crammed on board (375 pax over capacity)  nervous about hostilities that anyone with half a brain knew would start any day.........and then..........mid-crossing....It happens.  on 30th August, the "Queen Mary" departs Southampton.  On 01 September,  Germany invades Poland.  on 02 September,  Britain delivers its ultimatum, and on 04 September, without response from Hitler,  declares war on Germany!   All this took place during this, the last peacetime crossing of the Queen Mary for the next 7 years!
Many of the books  on the "Queen Mary" have  written about this mad dash to the USA made by the Queen Mary on her last peacetime voyage before World War II.  Among the notables on this "last voyage" were Bob Hope and wife, and JP Morgan (who gave up part of his suite so overbooked passengers would have a place to sleep)-still, there were cots rigged up in many of the public spaces..... Britain had sent million in gold to the USA (seems like a small amount in today's dollars) for safekeeping.   On 02 September the Admiralty ordered the "Queen Mary" to full alert, ordering her to alter course by 100 miles to the south and make all possible speed.  The Mary dashed at top speed, while crew painted out the glass on all portholes. Passengers gathered in the lounges to hear the BBC broadcasts of the unfolding events!
I have several menus, and 2 daily programmes listed from this historic voyage.  See my listings!  I've been collecting ocean liner memorabilia for 50 years and I have never seen items from this voyage before on eBay.  Don't miss out!
