The so-called Bird of Paradise is better known as Victoria’sriflebird. With beautifulplumageworn by indigenous people of the Yidinji tribe, the bird is known to them as the “duwuduwu.” The bird was first spotted by outside Europeans in 1848 and named for the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom at the time, Queen Victoria I.
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Australian Silver Bird of Paradise Coin, you’ll find the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria I for the title. This is the fourth-generation design from Ian Rank-Broadley of the Royal Mint and was created in 1998.
