2017 Wm. Barber NGC PF70 Half Union Silver Set - 2.5 oz Large HD 2.5oz Small Hd

In the years following the California Gold Rush, a problem emerged:  too much gold and not enough paper money.   To fix this issue, the US Senate authorized the creation of 0 and gold coins named the "UNION" and "HALF UNION".  These would have been the largest circulating coins in US History.  Unfortunately, the bill died in the House of Representatives.  But US Mint Director Henry Linderman still had Chief Engraver, William Barber, create a pair of UNION Half Union Proofs.  The original proofs (Judd - 1548) still reside safely within the Smithsonian.
This set of Pattern Proofs include both the Small Head and Large Head Liberty Designs.  With Permission of the Smithsonian, these are recreations of William Barber's Half Union design.
Just like the original patterns, each of these come struck in 2.5 ounce of precious metal (.999 silver, in this case) for a total of 5 Troy Ounces.
