Description
Cunard Line: Two special items distributed to V.I.P.s in June 1939 upon the MAURETANIA's maiden arrival in New York. The first is the menu for a special dinner held onboard on June 26, 1939. V.I.P.s feasted on Beluga Caviar, Consomme Printaniere, Sole de Douvres, Poulet Grille Baltimore, and Peach Melba, all accompanied by the proper wines and liqueurs. On the cover is a metalized portrait of the new ship.
The second is a deluxe intro brochure with a Cunard Orange cover. Witty text is provided by H.T.W. Bousfield.
Like the similar interiors brochure created for big sister QUEEN MARY, this booklet is lavishly decorated on each page with gold foil trim. Full page photos show public rooms, cabins, and artwork. In front is a fold-out color portrait by Frank Mason of the ship outboard from London.
Images from Cabin Class (renamed First Class after the war) show a plush stateroom, Restaurant, Lounge, Smoking Room, Grand Hall, and Observation Lounge.
Tourist Class (later Cabin Class) views include the Dining Saloon, Smoking Room, and Lounge.
Third Class (known after the war as Tourist Class) has two photos - a comfy cabin and the Lounge.
Color artwork photos show a Walter Gilbert silver-bronze relief in the Cabin Smoking Room, the big Walter Gilbert map of the North Atlantic (complete with a moving ship) in the Cabin Foyer on A Deck, Charles Pears' landscape painting from Promenade Deck, "The Tower of London" painting by H. Davis Richter which hung in the Tourist Class Dining Saloon, a bronze figure from the Cabin Class Lounge symbolizing "The Spirit of the Atlantic" by Barney Seale, and decorative circus panels by Winifred Humphreys from the Cabin Class Children's Playroom.
Very good condition.
