1874-76 UNITED STATES, Fifth Issue 25¢ TWENTY-FIVE CENT Fractional Currency NOTE
Description
This is a very nice, United States Fractional Currency
"Twenty-Five Cent Note"
. It is from the fifth and last Issue of
“Shinplasters”
as these were derisively called. These were only released between February 26, 1874 and February 15, 1876. It is still legal tender and you could spend it.
During the Civil War people began to hoard hard currency, and coins, even pennies, disappeared. Merchants resorted to Postage Stamps and Tokens for change. The Government began printing
“Postage”
and then
“Fractional”
Currency to fill the need and keep the critical war time economy moving. By the 1870’s coins were circulating again and as the need was no longer present this was the last issue of Federal Currency ever printed that was valued under a buck.
